Baptism: A Sacred Step of Faith

Baptism holds an important place in the Christian faith, reflecting obedience to Jesus and a public declaration of faith. Here, we explore its significance and meaning.

Why We Baptize

We baptize because Jesus himself was baptized, setting an example for us. In Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus approaches John the Baptist at the Jordan River. Despite John’s hesitation, Jesus insists, saying, “It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Following his baptism, the heavens open, the Spirit of God descends like a dove, and a voice declares, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Additionally, Jesus commands us to baptize in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Baptism is both a command and a privilege for believers.

The Meaning of Baptism

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation. It symbolizes our identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:1-4). Through baptism, we publicly declare our faith and join the global family of believers. It is a means of grace—an experience through which God imparts His grace in a tangible way, much like communion.

The Practice of Baptism

We typically baptize by full immersion, following biblical examples (1 Peter 3:21). Immersion best represents the profound imagery of being buried with Christ and rising to new life. However, we also accommodate those unable to undergo full immersion, focusing on the heart’s intention.

The Next Step

For new believers, baptism is the immediate next step, as seen in the New Testament (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16). While not required for salvation, it is a vital act of obedience, signifying a commitment to follow Jesus.

If you’ve recently decided to follow Christ, we encourage you to take this sacred step and experience the profound joy of baptism.
