Hebrews 11–12

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Hebrews 12:12

So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Reflect on the “huge crowd of witnesses'' mentioned in Hebrews 12:1. Who in your life can you identify as your personal “witnesses” — i.e., people who have demonstrated strong faith and encouraged you in your spiritual journey?

  2. Consider the specific “weights” and “sins” that may be hindering your spiritual race, as described in Hebrews 12:1. What are some neutral or even good things in your life that might be holding you back if they are not properly balanced? How can you address these hindrances?

  3. Hebrews 12:2 encourages us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we run the race set before us. How can you practically apply this advice in your daily life? What specific actions can you take to maintain your focus on Jesus amid life’s challenges and distractions?

  4. Reflect on the concept of endurance in the Christ-following race. Are there areas in your life where you feel particularly tired or discouraged in your faith? How can the examples of faith in Hebrews 11 and the encouragement in Hebrews 12 help you to persevere and find renewed strength?
