Genesis 1-3

We believe that under the direction of the Holy Spirit, the various authors were able to know what God wanted them to communicate to their time and to the people that were a part of their particular point in history, but to also speak to the generations to come, to give foundations of faith. The Bible corrects us when we're wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people for every good work. Right? And so this Bible that you and I have access to, from Genesis to Revelation, is able to speak into our lives in very profound and powerful ways.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 | All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

And it says, in the beginning, not a beginning…

Genesis 1:1, 26 | In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [...] Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”
Genesis 2:15-17 | The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

Genesis 3:1-13 | The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

“Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”

Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?”

“The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

Genesis 3:15 | And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 3 from the “Jesus Storybook Bible”

"In another story, it would all be over and that would have been the end, but not in this story...

God loved his children too much to let the story end there. Even though he knew he would suffer, God had a plan. A magnificent dream. One day he would get his children back one day.

He would make the world their perfect home again and one day he would wipe away every tear from their eyes. You see, no matter what, in spite of everything, God will love his children with the Never-Stopping, Never-Giving-Up, Unbreaking, Always-and-Forever Love. Though they would forget Him and run from him, deep in their hearts, God's children would miss him always and longed for him like lost children yearning for their home.

Before they left the garden, God whispered a promise to Adam and Eve: "It will not always be so. I will come to rescue you and when I do I'm going to do battle against the snake. I'll get rid of the sin and the dark and the sadness you let in here. I'm coming back for you."

Genesis 3:15 Tells Of Christ And How He Will Defeat Sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 | For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Genesis 3:15  Moves us to Praise.

Colossians 2:12 | For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

Jesus lived a sinless life...He didn't deserve to die for anything that happened in Genesis 3. For many of us, as we process these particular chapters of the Bible, these verses move us to praise, because it's here in this moment that you and I, with Genesis far behind us and the reality of today in front of us, we know that God fulfilled his promise. And because of that, we know that he is good and he is faithful. We know that he crushed the head of the serpent when he went to the cross, and he took upon himself the curse that you and I deserve. We know that he is worthy of our praise, because it is he who raised from the dead, gained victory over sin, and gave us the promise of resurrection and eternal life.
